Default squeaky noise

My vette has a squeak (sounds just like the bedsprings squeak on a tv sitcom)
I only hear it at parking lot speeds and it changes with the speed of the vette. It sounds like its in the rear. I'm assuming shocks or leaf spring? Any ideas?

I've never seen u-joints that can be saved once they start squeaking, it's too late.

Lots of possibilities...U-joints may be one of them, but I sure wouldn't start with them. If you still have a leaf spring, a couple of leaves could be 'dry' and rubbing at low speed; any two pieces of plastic rubbing together can squeak; the seal around the rear glass can squeak if dry; the spare tire can be rubbing on the carrier housing as it shakes; yada, yada, yada. My suggestion is to get a spray can of silicone lube and wipe/spray lube on one selected item at a time until the squeak goes away. When it does, you will know what was squeaking. If you eliminate all the 'easy' stuff and don't find it, then you can consider whether U-joints need to be changed [or not]. Oh, I would spray some PB Blaster on the U-joints one joint at a time to locate the offending joint ahead of disassembly. It will seep into the bearing and should wet it enough to stop the squeak temporarily. That's better than changing out the U-joints only to find that they weren't the problem.

I agree with 7T1vette. Start simple and 1 thing at a time. Then progress to the more difficult. Seems that when someone posts a problem on here, the responses are to tear things apart and start replacing parts.
7T1vette, I like your logic and progressive problem solving!

The responses from the more knowledgeable members are simply suggestions of what it mightbe, based on a vague description from somebody out in cyberland. I always assume that anyone that is about to undertake their own work is competent enough to know how to do basic investigation. I would have assumed also that the OP had done at least some elementary investigation like bouncing the car up and down to see if it's the suspension. I'd hate to find that no one checked for stray squeaky toys under wheels.

Vague description= vague answer

Next possibility: parking brake springs.

What's your point, Mike? That your "pinpoint" assessment of the U-joints being the problem was 'spot-on'? I certainly agreed that joints could be the problem, but offered the OP a way to systematically look for it on his car. What's your problem?

No problem with your post that's for sure. Didn't appreciate the other post lecturing about giving suggestions.

I would put my money on one of the 6 U-joints.....the characteristics described are typical of U-joints

by chance does it go away when depressing the brake? could be the brake pad squeaking on the caliper...would not be the first time this has happened.

Here is something that you could overlook. My car had a similar problem, it turned out to be the muffler hanger tongue rubbing in the rubber fitting. Mine is a 81. I found it by accident checking other areas under the car. I grabbed the tail pipe to help slide out from under the car and I heard the squeak.
Good Luck Tim

I'm going to slide under and look this weekend. It squeaks even if I have my foot on the brake but slowly moving, so I'm going to rule out brakes.
