I am trying to get her back on the road for spring. But having problems with trying to figure out which throwout bearing to use. Here is the story. My throwout bearing fails. I pull everything out. Resurface flywheel, new pressure plate, pilot bushing, and throwout bearing. These new parts I bought as a kit from O'reilly's. Well the throwout bearing that failed measures 1 1/2" and the bearing in the kit measures 1 1/4". I look in the Chilton's and it calls for 1 1/4", as the kit has. Not satisfied, I call O'reilly's and they look it up. Their system tells him there was two options. One possibly being the 1 1/2". I am going there in the morning with both to compare. What's going on here? The Chilton's doesn't even mention 1 1/2". Do I stick with what came in the kit or do I go with what came out of the vette? And if I go with 1 1/2" how will it work with the kit? Help
Re: Help!!! Throwout bearing problem. Who is right? (71stingraybigblock)
I ran into the same issue on my 71 BB. The parts laces only carried the shorter bearing. You can't use the short bearing with the factory clutch fork stud.
I had problems finding a long bearing, so I went with a short bearing and an adjustable stud. It was $10 or so from summit. I hear some forum members found a longer stud that was used in trucks or something???
Re: Help!!! Throwout bearing problem. Who is right? (zwede)
I gave Oreilly's the number off the original throwout and they did find it on their system as a second option for the corvette. They could not give any more info about why there is a second option. They ordered it from the warehouse and it will be there Sat. morn. So I am bringing both bearings to compare.
