Default Howards Cams?

I remember seeing a engine build that had a Howards cam in it, but don't recall too much about it. Have most of you heard of Howards Cams? Do they make good stuff? How would their roller cams compare to a company like Comp Cams, Lunati, or Isky?

My 528 hp 489 has a Howard hyd flat tappet cam - its a good piece of kit (My opinion) My engine was built in the UK by John Sleath Race cars, probably one of the top three engine builders over here. John always has Howard do his custom grinds. If you are interested I can dig out the further info - it actually makes the Comp Extreme Energy range look fairly mild in terms of opening and closing cam ramps operation.

Please do! I'm quite interested in this company! Also, do you know which cam you have or is it a custom grind?

So far I've been looking at Part# 120265-10. It's a little hotter than what I wanted to go with, but my dad has been pushing me to go with a hotter cam. I guess mileage doesn't matter anymore when you go big.. haha

Both Iski and Howards supply camshafts for racing and are top of the line...but so are many others...Engle, Crower to name a couple more...
I used and was supplied every one of them except Engle...considered a Olds cam where as the other companies were Chrysler specialists....you cant go wrong with any of them

The advantage with using aftermarket heads is that you have makers flow rates available. Select a cam which lifts valves only as far as required to achieve maximum flow.
Mine is as follows,
Howard Hydraulic Flat Tappet 3000-6400 Lopey idle. Max Marine Moderate Performance and Bracket Racing Max Effort.
Part no. is 122441 - .545 inlet valve lift - .536 exhaust lift - .320" lift at cam, inlet - .315" lift at cam, exhaust - 236 degrees @ .050 intake duration - 240 degrees @ .050 exhaust - 112+4 degrees lobe centres - zero lash. Comment - cam is a little noisy mechanically!
Engine spec as follows, Brodix Race Rite Oval Port heads - 10.5 comp. ratio - Edelbrock RPM Air Gap Inlet, Proform 950 cfm carb - currently Hedman 1 7/8" headers - MSD Distributor & ignition - 225 bhp @ 2500 rpm, 475 ft/lbs @ 2500 rpm - max output, 528 bhp @ 5950 rpm, 565 ft/lbs @ 3850 rpm. Engine idles comfortably 700 to 900 rpm - power starts 1100 rpm - very drivable - fine with c/r Muncie and 3.08 rear end - pulls 15.8 UK mpg at 70 mph cruise (14 mpg US?)

Thanks Wally for that bit of info!

Rosco,
Sounds like a nice set up you have got there! I can't believe your still managing roughly 14 MPG with no overdrive with a 489!

I'm really not too worried about the heads not being up to task. They came off my Dad's old 396/375HP Chevelle SS. They have been completely reworked. I installed the 1.88's on exhaust, and had them ported and polished to help with the flow. I might look into some Dart Pro1's or AFR's in the future though.

Thanks for the info guys!

Go VERY careful in choosing your aftermarket heads - ports that are too big can mean low port velocity which will hurt low end performance and drivability. I originally intended using the heads on my 427 block, but later chose to step things up a little. Little point me usng a 'hotter' cam as heads are currently flowing at maximum cfm!

Ill definitely will call AFR or Dart, before I place an order on a set of heads. Hopefully, they can point me in the right direction. I am thinking as long as I stay under 325cc with this engine, I'll be fine.

Why did you choose to go oval vs rect? Aren't your head like 274cc's?

Rosco,

How did you fit that combo under a stock BBC hood, oops ... bonnet? Gofast is building me a 489 combo, but I am sticking with an 36 intake and Qjet.

Beautiful engine rosco! I wish I could have the opportunity to see that car in person! Did you have that air cleaner on when you dyno'd the engine?

No - this used edelbrock semi-drop down base (needed to clear billet throttle linkage) 2" element and Summit air filter top. The last item is absolute garbage as delivered - far too few 1/8" hole pierced in lid - had to take a 1" tank cutter and open the thing-out

You've got to be kidding me.. I bought that same lid (except I got the black powdercoated one) along with a k&n 2.5" in element hoping to clear my stock '73 hood with the torker 2-R. Since I'm running the stock high-perf drop base that lid hits the bowl vents on my speed demon. If I run a regular lid it will clear, but after looking at zwede's dyno pulls i think I should consider milling the choke tower..
