I think you do offer some good advice - but you talk in absolutes and you make people think you're the only shop that does quality work. You're not - not even close.

No, you don't believe in a budget build - but budget builds are part of the engine building universe - not everyone has $10K for a build. And the idea that a budget build is less durable is just I have probably around 50-75 builds that I did that were under $3500 that are still on the road and running great.

We don't need to raise the torque plate issue again. Anyone that was on that thread knows that I DO believe in torque-plates - but you were posting that engines can't be built without them...which we know isn't true simply due to the millions of engines that left the factory and ran for millions of miles without them.

Finally, and I mean finally, there sure are bad shops out there. I ran into one locally (anyone in Seattle can send me a note and I'll let you know who), and it happens. But there are also a lot of great shops out there other than yours.

So go have a and relax - and maybe take a more positive look at your participation in this forum...and elsewhere.
Billa
There are alot of good shops out there but they are far and few between and most car owners don't mind paying for good work but most shops make claims they can't back up when the engine is done and running.

I have leaked down more engines that have just been built and the customers are not very happy with the money they spent to have it done right and after looking over the build its not what I would call a performance biuld.

I probably get between 50 to 75 calls and emails about people unhappy with thier engines after a rebuild about oil pressure problems, knocking, vibration problems, using alot of oil, leak down test high, lifters and cam shaft problems. ETC.

So if I can save someone the greif and aggravation of what others have gone through because of shorty machine work I have done my job posting info on what needs to be done and done right.

10K build hell with a new Dart block, Callies rotator, AFR heads, new from intake to pan I bet it can be done under 10K no problem.

Look at all the problems guys post here and it should be and most guys don't know what it takes to do a good job and they believe what the local jobber shop tells them.

I'm using a 3.800 stroke, so zero deck is at 9.025. hopefully it cleans up by 9.015. I wouldnt want to go much more.

I'll just jump in here and mention that I was able to meet Carl last week at PRI over a nice dinner and drinks with other friends.

Carl is about as down to earth and honest as you can get and I look forward to his friendship going forward. He tells it like it is....but it's no bragging or anything like that. He's speaking from experience and we're all going to benefit!

Thanks,

JIM

If that's Pat Musi's shop that's where I would go, he can build himself some pretty fast motors.

I would expect a good quality build from his shop but you are going to pay for the expertise. Can't recommend the shop because obviously I have never been there but you can take my opinion for what it is

If anyones interested, I've decided to go with 1.126" CH pistons, 6" rods, and have the deck SQUARED (not decked any more than what it needs to be correct at all corners), have my pistons stick out of the bores a little, and use a .042" compressed height MLS gasket. I feel pretty good about this combo.
When I added everything up I came up with 9.026 for zero deck height and the tops of the pistons could be cut if they are not coated.

whoops, I miss stated the C/H, its 1.125". I think i'll be ok with them poking out a little bit, because I def wouldnt feel comfortable having them cut down.

Yes, it is Pat Musi's shop. and judging from the quote I got, he's probably the best in NJ. Double the average quote from the 10 recommended shops I've called. I'd love to take my block to him, but then I'd really love to have a bugatti veyron too. neither of which are happening. If I was going to spend that much, I'd just save a little more and get a pre-assembled aftermarket short block.
