Default Engine temps...

I just bought an infrared temperature sensor and discovered a big discrepancy in temps on my engine. It seems that the left side (driver's) of my engine is running about 100 to 150 degrees cooler than the right side. This goes for the temp of the cylinder head and exhaust manifold. The temp of thermostat housing reads about 185 with a 180 degree thermostat. The car seems to run fine. Should I be concerned.

I wouldn't be concerned. I would bet it is due to the circulation pattern of the coolant through the block..

All small block chevys run hotter on the left bank. nothing to worry about. that temp at the t stat is ideal. 160 to cold 200 to hot.

If and when it boils over, should you become alarmed. If it's not boiling over, It's not overheating. Have a nice day. Gene

depends on coolant mix,cap press rating. you could limit boil over to 275 or better

Thanks all. I had never heard of the heat difference. It sure makes me feel better. Merry Christmas to all.

I would bet that the heat riser valve on your right exhaust manifold is stuck in the 'closed' or partially closed position causing it to run hot. If so, you need to fix it or, at least, wire it open. You can do some real damage to the engine if the riser valve is closed and you run it at highway speeds for very long.

I thought of this also, had this happen to me but while it was stuck closed power was noticably down and manifold was darker color from the heat..
