1971 350/270, I noticed the altenator belt is rubbing the power steering pump when I let off on the throttle. I replaced them with some Dacon belts from Checker Auto and noticed I have only a 1/16" between the belt and the pump. Is anybody else experiencing this problem. I am thinking about buying GM belts.
I had the same problem with Gates belts when I first got my '70. GM belts solved the problem. BTW, you're supposed to have a rub shield on the PS pump I think. At least in '70 they had one. ~Juliet
Thank you for the info Juliet. Anybody with a 71 have the same problem. How much clearance do you have between the alternator belt and power steering pump?
I have the same problem on my 77.
It was rubbing just a little (I think they are cheapo belts, but I didn't buy them, so I wouldn't know). Enough to make some noise. I put a washer between the bracket and alternator. No more noise. Clearance is maybe 1/16". Now it is on the 'some day' fix list.
My car also has no shield.
