Default The LT1 going in the 68

Here's a few pictures of the almost completed late model LT1 going in the 68 Vert I was asking questions about. The wiring harness will be a different story. It's almost complete and I converted the old vette PS pump to serpentine setup. As you can see, all accessories have been moved to the left side vs their original side on the right. I had to make my own bracket and idler pulley to get the serp belt under the water pump but I think it will work. Will see soon enough I guess...

Nice work on the belt setup. Looks like the idler is very close to the PS pumpl like you said. I wonder if it would be possible to redrill the hole for the idler and move it away from the pump some.

Eddie...the picture is a bit deceptive. The pulley, at it's closest point to the water pump, is 3/8" away from it. It is a fixed idler pulley and not a tensioner so it will not move. I used the PS pump as the tensioner, so to speak. The third picture shows the more realistic gap

Nice work. Looks great. Should run nice too; those are good motors. I was always impressed how quick the Impala SS I had felt, for such a heavy car. LS conversions are great, but the stuff is real expensive. Nice to see some real-world projects going on.

Eddie...here is a realistic picture of the clearance between the idler pulley and water pump

Do you have enough contact area on the P/S pulley to keep it from squealing? [I'm not sure how much load is drawn by a P/S pump...]

Great work, by the way...

Great job! My C4 LT1 has been the most reliable engine I've ever owned, bar none. Even the dreaded Opti-Spark system has never reared it's ugly head for me.

I've had this car since I picked it up as a lease in 1995 and bought it straight out after the lease was over. I rebuilt it last year after having 175,000 miles on the clock. Before you actually put this engine in your car, get an aftermarket OptiSpark replacement. The OE unit does have it's problems. I placed an Accel unit on my rebuild and an Edelbrock water pump. Extra bucks, yeah, but I wanted to bulletproof my rebuild as much as possible.

Be a real friend and share the computer ECM wiring that you do to make this thing run. Also, are you going to use the electronic 4 speed automatic transmission? If so, please share the necessary wiring to make it work properly.

The LT1 engine is one of the best Chevy ever designed - it's a pity it didn't last long before the LS series came along and eclipsed the LT series.

Great work on what I'm seeing and good luck with the restof the project.

It has a new replacement Optispark and a new OEM water pump. I will be using the computer and wiring harness from the donor car I got the motor from. As of right now, I plan to use the original Turbo 400 auto that the Vette came with. I did replace all seals and gaskets while it was apart (down to the short block)

I am not sure as of yet. I thought about running a second idler pulley just to the right of the one I put in to route the belt under the water pump but hopefully, having contact with 1/3 of the pulley will be sufficient

I'm curious as to what you are going to use for a fuel pump
I will be converting my 68 to EFI soon, can't decide whether to go with an internal or external pump either way there's going to be some fab work involved

Planning on using an external fuel pump and regulator
