Which way do I turn the adjustment on my Crane Adjustable Vacuum Can (cw/ ccw) in order to obtain the maximum amount of advance at idle (using full manifold vacuum). I have 8"hg at idle on my 377ci. Yes, I also have a stop plate installed on the unit to limit total vacuum advance to 8 crankshaft degrees.
The directions that came with mine stated to turn fully CCW then begin turning CW in 2 turn increments until you hear pinging then turn CCW in 1 turn increments until no more pinging.
I'll be doing just that tomorrow as weight and spring kit and adjustable can were installed and now need to be dialed in.
Something you may find ....interesting. I suggest that you DO NOT use the centrifugal advance springs that are supplied with the canister. I have had one of these springs actually break on two separate occassions. You are far better off using OEM springs even if they come from an old distributor. I have never know these to fail.

Throw that adjustable unit in the trash and install a fixed unit with known specs based on your engine requirements. You can screw that adjustable one around all day, and in the end, you're never going to have any idea how your distributor is curved unless you put it on a distributor machine.
Vacuum advance control unit selection and specifications are outlined in detail in my Vacuum Advance Paper, which has been available to Forum members by e-mail request for several years. Yet you guys keep screwing around with this adjustable garbage and never getting your tuning set up right.
