A job may take me to NY state, specifically the Albany area, so I'd like to know about the emissions laws in NY. Will the ol' lady in red have to go through the humiliation of having her tail sniffed??? :D
Well a few of us New Yorkers were discussing this a while back and were a little confused...But I believe that cars that are over 20 years old are exempt from the sniffer but they are checked to make sure that the original emissions equipment is there...A few of us were reading up on the NY state emissions website and it's a tad confusing but that is what it looks to be...In reality I have not heard of too many New Yorkers having trouble passing though with older cars...The main point of concern is the catalytic converter...If it came from the factory with one then it is supposed to be there...However many smaller shops outside the cities just take a look to make sure the car is road worthy and compliant and seem to understand that older cars are older cars and are much more lenient(sp?)...Headers and the like are usually not a problem but I have to admit New York is getting tougher and tough with this stuff and perhaps if you have removed your cat you may want to consider putting it back on...That's about the best info I can give ya from my experience here!!...Good luck!...
My car did not come with a cat, or AIR. But it did come with EGR, and I've removed it. Hope I can get away with it! Glad to hear there's no sniffing... it's kinda embarassing for an ol' lady.... :D
Upstate NY does not check emissions with a machine that I have seen. I think the city does though. I could be wrong.
When I bought my 2000 vette in TN I was worried about emissions, the NYS DMV lady informed me that they don't do emission testing up here. (Washington County)
