Fresh air vents

Reinstalling the center console on my '71 and have a question about the fresh air vents (non-ac car). The vent cables obviously attaches the the little levers, but it also looks as though the cables should be attached to the center console somewhere (I think this would keep it tight so the vents pull open and shut) t. I looked at the AIM and it looks like it should be screwed to something on the console, but i can't really tell where. ??

I don't remember exactly now if the e-brake console was removed at the time but I usually just point and shoot a dozen or so pictures hoping for the best.
Sometimes I get lucky.

One of these days I'm going to end up scratching my lens!
