Broken Speedometer cable

Default Broken Speedometer cable

On my 1969 Corvette, I was finally able to remove the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer. The cable removed, had a plastic tip on the end of the metal cable that fits into the speedometer. This plastic tip has been ground down to almost where it attaches to the metal cable. Is there still part of this plastic end in the speedometer or do you think it ground itself into dust? The plastic end does not look as if it broke off. It looks like it was ground down.
How difficult is it to remove the speedometer?

Hi N6,
I'd say it would be a good idea to get a look into the speedometer coupling.
There is a great thread with pictures concerning getting the dash apart a few posts down from yours. It's by C3 Small Block and titled Step by Step..How to Replace....

Went through this myself recently, the plastic end was broken off

It would depend on how articulate you are, but I ground down a thin piece of wire to a long point, heated it up and pushed it into the cable hole(speedo was still in dash)......waited till it cooled and then pulled it out, along with the piece of plastic stuck to it
Once you get it out twist the remaining plastic piece from the cable....than buy yourself one of these puppies and fit it to the cable, grease and fit


That said, i did end up pulling the dash apart anyway as the speedo was not working correctly once I had repaired the cable

Keep in mind if you pull the dash, whatever you do........replace all of your globes at the same time

That is ingenious!!! I will give it a try. My new cable has a metal end, not plastic.
