Need to get a new battery for my 55...Need something with lots and lots of cranking power...Had an optima battery but not sure if I want to purchase another one...The one I have was given to me by a friend who had obviously dropped it at sometime..The negative side case had some obvious damage...
So today I decided to fire up the 55..While I was cranking the starter my wife noticed that the negative terminal was smoking..I then felt the battery and it was hot on the negative side...So I'm guessing the battery is toast...
So is ther anything stronger than the optima red top...That can CRANK..Thanks
What condition are your battery cables in? If you have a poor connection, this will create alot of heat on and around the post. I would clean or replace the cables first before giving up on the battery.
Battery terminals are like new..No corrosion..Neither the cable or the terminal was hot..Just the side of the negative side of the case..And the smoke appeared to be comming from the damaged area on the case...I am pretty sure it's the battery..Never really had alot of cranking power and wouldn't hold a charge more than a week or two....Also I left it on my battery tender for the last 6 days and it never showed a compete charge....So I am assuming it's toast.. :smash: :smash: :smash:
Yeah, It does sound like it's on it's way south. If you drive the car rarely, you can go with a deep cycle battery. This is what I run in some of my cars that sit alot and the batteries last a long time with these. Some of these are pretty tall though, so make sure you have room. Whether you go with a deep cycle or not, get something with at least 800 cold cranking amps. This will be more than enough for you.
I've been running this battery for a couple years, and I've never had any problems starting the car even when it's zero degrees outside. http://acdelco.com/html/pi_batt_plat_main.htm
Be careful with that 55. A dropped battery is an accident waiting to happen, thats why your buddy got rid of it. I like the duralst battery from Autozone, can't beat the warranty. But the delco that came with my vette is holding up well also.
