took off intake manifold cuz egr was blocked solid.apparently stock mani has a heat shield riveted to the bottom.i got it off and wonder if i should even bother drilling,tapping,etc to put it back on. is it necessary?any info would be greatly appreciated.

I'd try and put it back on, heating your inlet manifold with hot oil wont help your mpg or performance.

The shield is there to prevent the oil from being overheated by the heat of the exhaust crossing through the inlet manifold under the carb.
If you have an electric choke and has blocked the exhaust gate in the inlet manifold (and removed the valve in the passenger side exhaust) then I would say you don't need it. Otherwise you should reinstall it (ist not that hard is it?).

How did you remove it? The proper way would have been to use some diagonal wire cutters to grab onto the head [enough to deform the head and cut some 'flats' on it] then unscrew it CCW. If you just ground them off, you have a problem. You will have to drill out the shank with a drill size needed for tapping a small screw. Somehow, you will have to permanently retain those screws so it can't back out and drop into the oil gallery. {The original rivets/pins were fluted and meant to be driven into place with a small hammer.}

I'd forgotten about the manifold heater passage :o I always block them off.

I've found some horrible stuff under those heat shields

i got 2 rivets out clean but 2 broke.i never seen a heat sheild on the bottom of a manifold so i didnt ever know what it was at the time.there was so much junk hiding under it that im happy removed it though.
i cant thank you all enough for your help.

so i either get that sheild back on and hook up all that egr crap or go the other way and dump the stock set-up and upgrade.

thank you again gentlemen.i have a feelin that your knowledge will be invaluable for this project.

I normally use gaskets without the heat riser cut out or with the supplied blanking plates.

But then I've got headers and an electric choke

Even if you're not keeping the intake stock the heat shield is a good idea as it stops the carb base getting hot.

what would be involved in getting rid of the egr?a non egr manifold,cap off the egr tvs switch,cap off carb connect?would that work or will i be needing to upgrade carb with this conversion?

let me get to what started all this.motor runs strong i just had a high idle.couldnt adjust to proper range.i was looking for vacuum leaks.at that point i found the egr was clogged solid and that led to intake removal.i dont mind the cost to upgrade but i planned on getting it on the road for a season just to see what would come back or what would break.(vette was sitting for quite a few years DOA.id rather run it so i can see how much of a teardown id be getting into.

TBH you're probably better off asking someone else as I'm not that familiar with the EGR system.

Where are you in the country and do you have to meet any emission equipment tests?

im in jersey.my vette is a 76 so i wont be subjected to too much in the way of emissions.probably be the smart way to go is new mani and carb.that way i can dump the egr and the old q-jet.alreadydumped the points and went to the hei so im headed that way already i guess.i just lack the knowledge to dial in the motor.everything ive ever owned in that era had a slant 6 in it and would run without oil pretty well.all this vacuum control stuff is not anywhere near my wheel house.
