The windshield washer pump seems to have finally called it quits. I tried to remove the tank so I can service the pump but it looks like the master cylinder (and possibly booster) needs to be removed before the tank can come out. I did notice the neck of the tank comes off, so that seems to help but I still can't get the tank out of there.
Am I missing something here? There must be an easier way. At this point, any help is much appreciated (hopefully it's something really simple.....)
I'm not positive, but I think you can get to the tank by removing the lower splash shield. This is the shield that trim out the inner fender to the side rocker panel.
I just fixed my 79, after spending many hours trying to work out how to remove it, the answer was simple. Give up and buy a $15 in-line pump, (any half decent motor parts store), remove the necks top screw, remove neck, it just slips out of tank, undo two bolts that hold the tank in place, a bit tricky here but not too bad, manipulate the tank until it is upside down or close to it, leave old pump motor in tank, cut hose about 2 inches from old pump, fit new pump in line, remove the two wire connector from old pump, remove copper connectors from the plastic housing and connect to new pumps pins, turn tank back up the right way and refit with two bolts, just let new pump hang, its quite safe in there, push neck back in and do up neck screw, fill with water and thats it.
Warning, tank and neck may be brittle with age so treat it like it is 30+ years old.
I just ten minutes ago removed mine. Remove the lower splash shield and then undo the three bolts holding the charcoal canister bracket and move it to one side. The washer bottle has three screws. Remove them and slide it out from underneath. Make sure to detach the electric clip from the motor itself on the bottle. I also have the one I removed for sale if someone wants it.
