Default Horn won't stop blaring!

1. took a look at my fuses for the first time since i bought my '80 Vette a few months ago and noticed a missing fuse: the one for the courtesy lamps/dome light/horn, etc.
2. I plugged in a new fuse and the horn started blaring (*horn didn't work before - now i know why). Courtesy lights also came on. Took fuse back out.
3. After looking around under the hood I found the horn and unplugged it.
4. Plugged the fuse back in and no horn but the courtesy lights remained on even after I closed the door.

SO... my question: what would cause these items to remain "on"?
I'm a newbie when it comes to auto electric (and auto mechanics in general) so I'm not sure if the answer is right under my nose or not.

Thanks in advance, folks...

PS: I understand 'Vette's have two horns in the front near the headlights (right?), but I found a third horn under the hood in the rear driver side near the window washer fluid. What is it? Anti-theft or something? By the way, i noticed it's unplugged but I was afraid of connecting it and hearing "La Cucaracha"...

Yes that's the anti-theft horn. It's also probably the one that's giving you the problem.

hmm... the anti-theft horn was, and still is, unplugged. it has been like that since i bought the car - i just spotted the horn today. when i put the fuse in it was definitely the front horn(s) sounding, not the anti-theft.

In that case the next culprit in line is the horn circuit in the steering column. This is easy to test. There will be a flat connector under the dash. Unplug it and plug the horns back up.

If the horns stay off, the problem lies in the column or the button.

If the horn stays on, the problem is a short somewhere between the flat connector and the horns.

I think the interior lights are on a timed delay. Stays on for a few after door is closed.Maybe someone w/a 80 will chime in.

The interior lights have a timer relay behind the glove box, it will stay on for a minute or two then go off, and go off instantly when the ignition is turned on. I assume you checked to see if the headlight switch was twisted to the ON position? If the lights turn out to be ok, then there is a shorted or grounded wire somewhere (you knew that). If you have a manual, it will help you find the wiring issue. Could be the horn button on the steering wheel, pop the cover off and check with a meter. Good Luck.

I had the same horn issue when I bought my 77. The problem was broken contacts behind the horn button. I don't remember if I had to remove the wheel to replace them.

Anyone have a diagram or picture of the flat connector for the horn?
I looked under the dash and saw quite a few connectors, and I'm not sure what to look for.

Is there a way to disconnect the horn from the steering wheel (instead of unplugging the flat connector), perhaps by messing with the horn contact/shims or something?

I had the same problem on my 78. The horn button is commonly bad or there is a 5 point plastic insulator under the teloscopic spring that goes bad. You have to pop off the wheel adapter to get to it. Mine was brittle and all of the fingers where broken off. Purchase a new insulator and a new horn button. Fix'd

BKbroiler and FatCat Red 25th:

Awesome. I was hoping you would say that. It's a lot easier to replace the horn parts than to go hunting for a bad wire or something (especially since I'm planning to change out the steering wheel very soon!). I'll put in an order for a new button and insulator.

thanks for the help fellas, you guys are like the brothers my father never told me about....
