Default Auto to manual conversion

I currently have a TH-400 in my car and I am considering changing to a manual and my question is this.
My 383 is externally balanced, what type flywheel do I use to keep everything balanced ?

Thanks

Get one that is for an externally balanced motor. Your 400 used the larger flywheel so your starter is set for the larger 168 tooth flywheel. There are plenty of flywheels out there take your pick.

Thanks Gordonm, so any external, 400, or big block flywheel will work ? This is the first externally balanced engine I have ever messed with and was a little confused.

The only BB that was external was the 454 so it would have to be from a 454.

Check the flexplate to see if anything looks like it was tacked on or drilled for balancing.

If it looks clean you can just swap in an externally balanced 400ci small block flywheel, the correct size and tooth count of course

Welcome to the auto-to-manual club. This will be one of the best mods you ever make.

If interested, I've got a ...403 bellhousing available (std SB w/153 tooth flywheel).
