Recently I have a noise coming from the driver’s side at the top near the seat belt re-tractor. I have removed the re-tractor the t-top and the noise is still their. It sounds like metal bumping. After many drive around the block with all the trim removed and the re-tractor removed I have come to the conclusion that the bird cage has some how separated from the top roof fiberglass, you can’t see any separation but I think when the body flexes the bird cage is hitting the outer fiberglass causing the knocking sound. I don’t see any way to bond it with out some major work. What I am thinks is to drill a few small holes on the inside of the birdcage and use a spray bomb of the expanding insulation foam, filling the space so the metal cage is not hitting the fiberglass skin.
Does anyone see a better solution?Or can think of what is causing the noise?
Hi BD,
I believe at least some of the fiberglass 'halo' is pop-riveted to the birdcage hoop. You can see the rivets and the adjacent birdcage when you take off the interior lock pillar trim, and the halo trim. Also if you take off the long thin chrome trim that you see on the lip of the halo when the roof panels are off you can see some more pop-rivets. I'd look at all these to see how tightly the birdcage and fiberglass attached.
Regards,
Alan
