I'm a big fan of the Felpro one piece oil pan gasket. It doesn't leak.

That's where I was headed, but then I saw one of those Horsepower shows and they were using a bead of the Permaseal so I just became confuse. I have a pretty good leak on the gasket.
Definately a gasket. You can not remove the pan with engine in car. Or at least I could not on a '96 TA. Just lower pan, remove old gasket and install new by taking gasket around outside of pan, it will work. I had to do plenty of work on that car. mds...
I need some advice/opinions regarding whether to use a gasket or PermaSeal on my oil pan for my other car. It's a 94 Trans Am with an LT1 motor.
Thanks.
Use a gasket coated with permaseal.
No joke.
Alternativley my pick is Hylomar. It's a gasket sealant that doesn't try so should you have to pull it apart again, you'll actually get it off without scraping.

Man, I'm glad you told me that. It sure helps me be prepared for not being able to remove it.
A got lotsa work ahead of me. Tranny gasket, oil pan gasket, water pump, speed sensor. Who knows what else.
normally you just drop the steering arm and the pan will slide right out.
use the one piece permaseal gasket. works great. one shop told me not to use carb cleaner to clean the mating surfaces though because it can mess with the permaseal causing it to slip. brake cleaner was better. no evidence to back up either claim but i figured why take chances.
Well, got the tranny pan gasket, speed sensor and oil change done. No way I was going to be able to get to the oil pan gasket. The Y pipe is in the way and some protective steel cage that looked way too complicated to remove...and by that time I was tired. The tranny pan gasket was enough for one day.
