I just got home and realized my '71 was smoking. I freaked at first, but it was just coolant. So, figuring I'd deal with it in the morning, and I drop the hood down. Unfortunately, it didn't close right. The left side of the hood is up an inch, the right side is closed tight, and now it won't open at all. When I pull the hood release, there's no resistance to it, it just slides out and doesn't move. Anyone have any good advice on how to get my hood open now?
Chances are that the release cable broke at the end where the release lever is. If you car is stock as far as wiper door etc, then find a GM service manual. There is a picture of a tool made to open a hood with a broken cable as well as instructions on how to do it. I have a manual and if you sill haven't got it openby this afternoon E-mail me and I will send you a picture and info.
When my hood release cable broke I was able to just reach up from beneath and release the latch. My arms are kinda skinny so it was no problem. Reach up from underneath the car in the area behind the drivers side front tire.
there might be a hole in the firewall right where the release is..if there is enough room when the wiper door is up you might be able to get a screw driver in there and release the clip....
Sometime in the last year there was a thread on this forum that has a link to one of the major catalog parts places which had an article on how to get the hood open. I'm sure you can find it with a little work on your part. The idea is to remove the upper grille and wiper door. In the cavity there are plastic plugs that can be removed to get a screwdriver through the firewall and release either or both sides.
While it won't help you in you current situation, I'll share what I've done to prevent this problem from happening to me. I attached a wire to the left side latch, and let it hang down the side of the inner fender, and should my hood release cable ever break, all I have to do is to remove the gill cover, reach in and give the wire a yank, and the hood will come open.
Nope, it wasn't. The lever that presses against the hood was just stuck. That's why the driver's side of it was an inch up. Once I figured that out, I just reached in and pressed the release on the hood and it opened.
Yep that's exactly what I did (I think I started the post that got the reply with MA's article)....removing the side grille made it fairly easy to actually get a hand on it.
