Hey there. I'm new to the board and with my first post I wondered if someone could give me some help. I recently bought a 75 L48 to rehab and it has a stall problem. Basically, the car starts and idles well once warm but once you put it in gear it stalls. You can keep it going if you get on the pedal quickly but as soon as you come to a stop while the trans is engaged, stall. Any ideas? Thanks.
What kind of shape is the carb in? Electric choke? Any loose vacuum hoses? Cracked hoses? Take a pic of the motor and post it and you will get more responses.
It could be as simple as the idle speed being too low to sustain the engine when the tranny engages. When you put it into forward or reverse range, the drag within the transmission tends to slow engine speed. Normal idle speed in neutral might be 800-900 rpm so that the engine will be at 650 rpm when placed in gear. If your [neutral] idle speed is lower than 800, it probably will bog down and kill the engine.
If neutral-idle speed is adequate, then there is some additional internal drag within the transmission. One or more clutch packs has some warped plates in it which generates additional friction. If that's the case, there is no other solution but to rebuild it or exchange it for a rebuilt unit.
