First off I would like to say this is my first post here. I have read several post before and found there are some very knowledgeable users here so I figured I would give it a shot.
To the point now....
I recently bought my first Corvette. Its a 1981 with and automatic transmission. I was in the process of trying to do several things. 1st I am trying to figure out how much of the car is original so I did some number checks on the engine and all passed.
Well I also was trying to tell more about the transmission so I could hook up the lock-up torque converter back up. While doings so I noticed the RPO number on the side of the transmission had MX2 on the side of it. I was told when I traded for the car that the transmission and engine was original but the engine had been rebuilt. But after seeing the color of the wires that came off of the electrical connector on the side of the transmission I noticed that they weren't the same color as the schematics showed they were.
That leaves me to question is this the original transmission? Did GM used some of the Buick universal bolt pattern 350c transmissions (MX2) in the Corvettes or is this transmission one that someone replaced the original one with?
the MX2 is the correct trans for the 81 vette. that is the one i have in mine. it was the first one with the lock up converter. this is also known as the th350C.
Wonder why GM would put a Buick transmission in a Corvette? Were they just using up the available 350c transmissions before the switched to the 700r4? Am I correct in the MX2 RPO code meaning it was a Buick transmission?

Probably an 'interim' change forced by GM demand to get fuel mileage increased. L/U clutch transmission was an improvement...although small. Change to O/D trans with L/U was the 'real deal' (700R4).
1980 had the Lock Up Converter THM 350 as well. About the time the warranty ran out ran out one day My Converter " Locked Up ". I drove it probably 150 miles late at night back to my neighborhood Trans Shop and left it there. Came back in the AM and told them its " Locked up " and they told me that's impossible. They started the car put in drive and it died. Said, never seen that before guess it needs a new converter which it did.
