I want to use a longer filter for my BB (for better filtering), but I cannot recall what the old Fram or A/C part number was.... Can ya'll guide me?
I went to the auto parts and saw Fram HM5. Is that it? We use to refer to it as the 'truck filter' as that was the same filter as used on the chevy motor, but just longer.
Wix filters have a 1 and 2 quart filter available. 51061 is the 1 quart and 51794 is the 2 quart. NAPA stores also sell Wix under the NAPA brand and could cross the Wix numbers to theirs.

B3 51061 5.2” No 2/20=11/27 285 9-11gpm 21
B4 51061R 5.2” No - - 28gpm 61
C1 51794 7.8” No - 270 9-11gpm 21
What is and why is Beta ratio important?
What is Drainback and why is it important to have or NOT have?
UPDATED:
My assessment: I can see the value in microns so the non-race filter is better. But the Racing filter would be of value for GPM. Otherwise – could the oil pump want to pump more flow and the limiting bottleneck be the non-race filter? Obviously the 7.8” tall is best for most filtration – any negatives?
I called Wix and they said drainback is basically for horizontally mounted filters and to maintain oil in filter. Mine is vertical and so I will not need drainback valve.
Wix also said the larger Micron number offers less filtration - which for a street engine is not good.
So B3 and C1 appear to be best for a street application due to best filtration. Wix also said the 7.8" filter does not really offer anything. I could see where any interference with the public roads could be devastating within a few seconds.... so maybe the 5.7" is my best overall bet. Thanks for listening

I just ordered (a month ago) a few of the long (not that 2 qt one though) Wix filters from Rock Auto - coupling it with another order. Wix has a very good reputation.
I've used Wix for years, always been a good filter. I'm running the 1Q version on my 454. I refuse to use Fram after seeing one that was cut apart. Much less filter media and an end plate made out of cardboard (for real!)

For the Chevy's, the only filters I use nowadays are either Wix, Purolater or AC Delco. It's just easier for me to order the Wix from RA that to go to Pep Boys for the Purolater. I ALWAYS used Fram (in the past) until I found out how they were put (or not put) together.

to get a good fram, like in the past, you must go with the HP series at least.....
I use K&N 3002s on my BBC and SBC. Gotta love the 1 inch bolt on the end too. $10.95 each from Jegs. Advance Auto carrys K&N oil filters too for a little extra $$ but no shipping charges.
Ah - that was my next thing to research as I do not know exactly what oil pump is in my engine - I do know it is a high volume. What is Melling though?
btw - K&N said their 3002 was 10-20 Micron and 16gpm for about $12
Chances are very great your oil pump is a Melling or one of it's derivitives.
Don't get in a tizzy over the filters, a 1 or 2 quart regular Wix with the finest micron is fine.
You can always change just the filter and 1 quart more often, same result, better filtration. I do that with the synthetics all the time.
I'm using a PH13 because it is readily available.
I only drive 3-4 K Miles per year and change the oil + filter Yearly, so I guess that even with a lousy filter, it should take this.
The reason I use the longer PH13 is because of the high volume oil pump.
Regardless if a normal smaller filter has the flow numbers when new, I don't believe it keeps this flow rates all the time. The bigger the filter area is, the lesser is the chance to bypass, also during cold oil ops.
I am using FRAM filters for over 300.000 Miles on my Opel Manta B and never had any engine problems . The highest eng Miles collected was 250.000 KM ( about 160.000 Miles ) before I had to scrap the car due corrosion. I still have the engine as emergency spare. So the filters can not be so bad , can they ?
Oh, sorry, I can't anymore.
Just remembered that last filter I installed was a MAHLE OC114 , same size as the FRAM PH13.
Any thoughts about the Mahle ?
