as driveshaft said that is correct. now just for an example lets say you do go up too 14 initial and thats the total of 36 but you find your motor could still do with more initial then 14 (i think it does)as alot of motors in the 400 hp+ motors do like about 18-22 then of course thats going to make your total sky high around 42 . this is why msd,s and other distributors have different stop bushings to limit the total advance.

your motor sounds a little similar to the one in my camaro . similar compressioned,hp,383. after finishing it i ran it on 12 initial and 34 total for break in...yes i had run on. i adjusted my initial to 16-18 on the balancer and i installed the msd black bushing which limits centrifugal advance to 18 (dont quote me but its around that) and then i had no signs of run on again.

i did not have to adjust any carb settings and i dont run vacum advance.
