This forum saved me a few bucks and a lot of grief, thanks to some of you guys.
I took the shaft to a local driveline mech. They insisted that they needed the slip yoke for proper balancing of a repaired shaft. Found that the slip yoke had grooves in it, caused likely by the dented shaft and vibration.
So I have a newly built shaft with new yoke, aligned and balanced together.
Hopefully, the vibration problem is cured. But we won't know for sure until all the salt dust is off the road. April, maybe?

If the yoke is grooved, the bushing in the transmission is probably bad too. This being loose is probably where the vibration was coming from. Not the driveshaft. I didn't see any pics, but it would take a pretty big dent to cause a vibration.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
The dent seemed pretty small to throw out the balance but a new driveshaft and yoke is nice to have. Check the bearing / bushing in the tailhousing of the tranny.
Now that is mentioned I remember when I first got mine with stock T10 tranny there was quite a bit of slop in yoke but it didn't vibrate, I guess it centered itself when it started spinning, the OP may not be that lucky, but I hope that solves the problem
Kinda thought he would walk out with a new driveshaft, like walking into a barber shop and asking the barber if he thinks there is anything wrong with his hair

That's good; gave me a giggle. But sometimes you gotta trust people to be honest. These guys seemed to know what they were talking about. Interesting about the tranny. I've printed out your comments and we'll find out soon enough. I might even take it out for a run.

I bought a used drive shaft for my 68, it looked brand new. I installed it an the vibration was terrible. I took it out and back to the place I bought it. The owner was not in, but, the yard man was. He laughed and said he had taken it out of a burnt car. I was pretty hot when I talked to the owner. He just said; It looked good and the only way to find out was to try it. Never went back. Have a great one. Gene
Hello Paule, Sounds like I may have a similar vibration problem as you did. I have a '78 L82 with a 4 speed and a vibration that gets real noticable at around 60mph and just gets worse the faster you go. It's mostly felt in the gear shift lever. I'm in the process of changing out all of the "u" joints and getting all the shafts balanced. The slip yoke does have a couple of wear rings in it, just thought they were from the rear transmission seal??? and didn't think that should cause an imbalance so had not planned on replaceing the yoke. Did you have any "up and down play" in your yoke. After reading you thread, I think I'll get a new yoke and have the shaft rebalanced with the new yoke. Did you have to replace any component of your half shafts when you were hunting your vibration problem? Thanks MGB (Mike)
Yes Sir; MotorHead was talking about the rear bushing in the tail housing, I think that I have installed that bushing without taking it off the Transmission, by just tapping a new bushing, in behind the old one, pushing the old one forward, in the tail housing, leaving it. I know there is someone who will be smarter than I on here, who will tell you the truth. Have a great day. Gene
