When i bought my 76 the guy gave me a box which had the aircon pump (or the big black thing that runs off a drive belt). The cooling thinggie that looks like a radiator is there and so are the controls inside the car, so I thought that I would take it to an aircon place and get it all hooked up again. Can anyone give me any advice on what else to check/test before I take it in to them? I dont know anything about aircon, but I dont want to turn up and have them ask where the "whodackie" is and me not know what they are talking about.
there is a hundred parts in the aircon system but it sounds like you have 2 of the big 3 , hopefully they are both in good condition .(the big black thing and radiator thing) number 3 part is the reciever /dryer costing about 100 bucks and should be kept sealed until installed in the system.
it sounds like your car was once a standard aircon car so thats promising in that installing all the parts back to the airbox on the passenger side might be not too hard. if you dont have them your going to need brackets to mount your compressor and the flow and return piping lines from the condensor ( the radiator thing) , wiring and a low pressure switch.
def a job for a aircon guy if you dont know much about it and im sure someone will chime in on here with a recommendation. sometimes it worth looking into the vintage air kits if you need to hunt for parts .

...any advice...
Consider the swap to R-134. The AC technician can answer your questions about the swap. Purchase an automotive AC book, read through it, and you won't have to rely upon "whodackie" or "thingie" when you talk to him/her.
If it gets hot there like it does here, you will not regret this decision lol
When I got my car, it was originally an AC car, but with no parts except he left the hard cooling lines in. I bought all the stuff used (mostly) and got it up and running myself, and it was definitely worth it. Only problem I have now is if I try to run the AC while idling in 85+ degree weather, the engine will start overheating :[
