Default 1975 stroker power steering problem

Hi, finally I've finished the car, and I'm very happy.
Here, you'll find a video with idle engine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4jELotNuJQ

I've QA1 coilover front & back, monospring and sixlinks on the back.

Yesterday, I had a mini-tour around the city, 30/35 MPH max speed, and I found the steering too "light'. Actually it has a new rack&pinion steering bougth from VB&P.

I hope you can understand what I mean, becouse I donnow how to explain in english :o

What I suppose to have when I change the original power steering with a rack&pinion one, is a precise and more direct steering. But I didn't had that.
Have any suggestions to give ?

thanks

I'm not sure If you have fixed your problem yet with the light
steering but I hope to hear what your fix is.
I just put a rack in mine but will not get to drive it until spring.
I have read about similar problems and have read about each
persons fix. The pump pressure, I have read can be a problem
and many have fixed it with a pressure regulator in the power
steering pump, This seems to be the most common fix. some even
remove the pump and say that it gives better feed back through the
steering wheel and is not all that hard to turn the wheel while sitting
still. The tie rod location is the other common problem that most have
made, including me, since then I have moved them to the forward location
on the spindle, like you said you have already done.

I think that the pump will be the problem and changing the pump rate will
fix the issues, but if it doesn't, do a search here on the forum about the
problem, I have read a lot of great information about this issue but it seams
that I can't remember all the info that I have read, I plan on going back and
rereading it latter when I get to drive the car and find I have this same problem.

You maybe able to find the parts locally, but if not I have found this pump pressure
kit that may be what is needed from speed direct.
http://cmc.speeddirect.com/itemdesc....899001&eq=&Tp=

Also You car sounds great, It sounds like it will be a handful and fun to drive.

Please keep us informed about the fix, I will be a big help to all of us. Thanks

Riggs.

Hey Riggs, thanks for your response !
I'm searchin' a oil pressure regulator here in Italy, by the way, now i've found from summitracig a Milodon adjustable oil pressure regulator #mil-21550.
I'll make all the adjustment I can, in order to fix this problem, and anyway my 'last beach' as we say here in Italy, is to remove the power steering.
I'll keep you informed about that.

thanks

Andrea

looking forward to your info.

If this doesn't give you the feel that you are looking for you
might want run the system with out the pump. I have not
driven mine yet but with the engine off setting in my garage
the rack seems to steer pretty easily, I might be running mine
with out the pump.

The engine is a classic 383 eagle kit with performer rpm package, and some handworks on the collector and heads
The exhaust is a true dual with flowmaster mufflers

Riggs.
Well Riggs, this is one possibility, but here in Italy, roads are pretty small and the turns also... so the power steering is a big help !
Anyway, I built this car for strip and street, but I bught a trailer, so probably I'll use it only for the strip.

I don't have rack and pinion but I have heard that sometime the steering pumps are too much for the rack.

Are you running the factory pump or the type 2 pump?

I found the link bellow while I was building my power steering with the type 2 pump. I don't need it but maybe you do if you are using the type 2 pump and the steering is too light.

You can email the guys at DSE and maybe they can give you some ideas. Maybe this control valve works on the older style pumps as well?

I've an update.
As I told you, I've bought a milodon oil pressure regulator, and it's the same posted by mysixtynine... well, not the same... the detroitspeed one is the right one... anyway, the most important thing is that the only difference we've noticed, is the hole you see on the pic. And it's a little bit bigger. So I think that you can customize the original one, and make different size to see which measure is better.
