I am sure that this has been asked in the past but i can't find it, I just bought a 76 and i want to lift the front and back end with a floor jack so I can put it on stands where do i put the jack and do i have open the doors undo the T-top ect.
I jack mine under the rear end and under the front crossmember close to the edge with a block of wood, 4 jack stands under the 4 corners of the frame behind front wheels and in front of rear wheels.. I dont open any doors or tops..
Hi O,
I put the rear stands where 71/454 suggested but put the front 2 stands just behind the front sway bar mounts. I find the front 2, if behind the front wheels, get in the way of me moving around under the car.
I also lay the tires under the car so if I were to knock the car off the stands it'll fall on the tires... not my chest.
Regards,
Alan
No body, but you can see the placement of the jack stands.
Make sure to check where you are going to place the jack first to make sure it is sturdy.....If the area is rusted the jack might have a tendency to break through...I had it happen to me before.

Jacking it up!
I always unlatch the T-Tops and close the doors to the first click before jacking it up, maybe others know better but I've never cracked anything doing it this way.
I have a floor jack with about 1/2 inch rubber pad, so I am taking it that i can lift from the rearend housing for the back and place the jack stand on the frame?

Have to agree there, Alan, placing the jack stands behind the front wheels on a big block tends to really flex the chassis with all that nose weight. Much better in front of the wheels at the location you show. I had my car sit like that for 6 months with no problems.

If you were to knock the car off the stands??!? Lol I do this practice too, and completely understand the point and the peace of mind... but honestly that made me laugh hearing it put that way. None of us is superman here!
But believe me I have heard the horror stories on this matter... all cases involved incorrect placement of jack stands because they sure as hell wont fail! If the car is positioned correctly on four points of jack stands there is no way any person could "knock" it off the stands!
All in all ... to put the tires underneath though... cant be too safe!

I agree with Alan, when I put my 77 up on four initially the front end weight started to crack the engine surround at the firewall. I fixed it quickly and now I do it as Alan shows here. I also did it this way for my 71 project in process now.
With the entire car sitting on jacks I suggest you get support up closer to the front. Have a good lift
