Default TA shims Problem (early 69)

I tried to install my TA shims tonight and ran into a problem. I do not have a Hole for the cotter pin in the TA pocket. I found my old shims and they did not have slots on them. They have a bolt hole that the TA pivot bolt went thru. I can not image installing the TAs and shims at the same time.

The ASM shows the cotter key and has a note telling you to put them in from the Outbound side. Since my car is an early 69, I am wondering if this was an engineering change later in the year.

My shims will fit inside the pocket below the opening for the TA.

Should I drill holes in pocket sides noted by the X on the picture? (dbl click to expand) As you can see there was no cotter key.

Is this where they should be?

TIA for any help or insight on this problem.

That's normal for a '69. Use the newer slotted style shims instead and drill the hole in the frame for the cotter pin.

I went down to our local hardware store and bought a 3/16" diameter drill bit that was 12" long. I think they called it an aircraft drill bit (don't know why!).

Worked like a champ on the 68 so it could run the slotted shims and have them locked in place.

Did the same thing on my early 69! Worked like a charm.

Thanks for the tip on the 12" drill. I used a 3/16 for the outside hole and then used a 1/8 to drill a pilot hole in the inner pocket wall. By using the smaller drill, I was able to position the drill in the center of the shim hole on the inner side.

Problem: The TAs will hit the cotter pin before they bottom out on the bottom pocket lip.

Solution: I am going to use a separate #10-24 bolt to secure each set (inner/outer) of shims, with bolt head inserted from the pocket inside. This should allow free travel of TA to bottom pocket lip.

I am a paranoid idiot.

The cotter pins did clear just barely. I have been snake bit so many times on this car, I am now expecting trouble at every turn.

The TAs & Shims & Cotter pins are all in.

On to the E-brake cable, brake lines, and the rest of the rear suspension.

Hopefully it is down hill from here on out.

Thanks for the help. I would not even attempt this without the forum and its members.

Hello, I have a 69 with holes that I think are for the cotter pin, but I'm not sure. I can't see how to get the cotter pin inserted, and how do you keep it in place? Can someone post a few pics that shows the correct installation with the cotter pin?

I found this thread with a few pics, I can see now where the holes need to be.
