Default 1968 a/c information

Hello to all,

Well I have been given the task to re-install air conditioning into a numbers matching 1968 Corvette.

The interior parts are still in place. But some...BOZO ...removed the compressor, brackets, hoses, condenser and drier.

The only part that is still factory installed is the "dog house" where the evap core is located...and what apperars to be s different type of VIR from what I normally know about. It looks much like the part for a 66-67 Vette....and NOT the VIR for a 69/on car.

My question is that due to many of the needed parts are available ( compressor, brackets, condenser) The hose assembly is not...from what I was told. SO has anybody installed a system off of a 1969 and had it work. And what type of "modifications" did you have to ho through to get it to work. The owner does not want to use an aftermarket system....even though I know that the aftermarket system is better performing...it is a visual factory look that he is trying to maintain.

I will look at my wiring diagrams and see if there is any difference in the wiriing from 68 to 69.

Any advice on where to get stuff or what grief you went through will be helpful. I have to get the car done in two weeks so time is somewhat important.

OH...The "drama" never seems to end!

Thanks and the best to all,
"DUB"

Dub,
I am no expert on this subject but I am fairly certain the the wiring for 68 is completely different than that of a 69. The 68 has a one year only air conditioning wiring harness. I think the 69 harness was used for 69 and 70 models. Also on the 68 thumb wheel (left side that controls vent hot and cold settings)there is a plunger type switch that is also exclusive to 68. This switch is not reproduced and will run a couple hundred if you can find one. Last I checked JT Piper had one but wanted $250. It would not surprise me if the AC setup on the 68 was closer to the 67 model than the 69.

There is a social group on the forum called 68 owners united we have about 50 members and this may be a good source of 68 information for you.

P.S. thanks for all your expertise on the paint and body forums. It is obvious you know your stuff. Who ever owns this 68 is lucky to have someone with your knowledge working on his car.

flyinfree,
Thank you for your response. I know I am fighting an "uphill battle" with this one. With time being an issue...I guess I was hoping for a "miracle". I agree that the system is quite similar to the '67 design....in the area of the evap core area where hoses connect. I am not looking forward to the possibility of doing a complete change over. The customer "kinda" wants me to perform a miracle....and if I had TIME, I probably could get it all in and working as designed. Boy oh boy...sometimes I wish whoever has the "magic wand" would share it.

Thanks for recommending JT. I am aware of them...as like some others...who may have the correct parts...I was hoping some one already did the "leg work" on this one...and would have some tips and advice about what problems I may run into.

Thanks again,
"DUB"
