Gents, Took my 82 Vette to a Corvette day at Dubai Autodrome, on leaving I was driving through the car park at about 5- 10 mph when I heard a terrible noise from the rear, I jumped out and looked under the car expecting to find something on the road but nothing. I limped home keeping the speed very low maybe 20 mph and luckily had only 1 mile to go. I did notice that if I sped up the rear wheel would screech, I'd very slow down and there would be no further noise. Once home I found my trans oil very low and added 1 litre. I ventured out in the car today and seemed OK for a while, low speed in residential area, once on the highway I put my foot down and seemed like just as the trans was shifting the screech reappeared, again I slowed and crawled home. I have been researching these threads looking for clues, Diff, Trans or rear wheel bearing? I see lots about clunking but nothing that sounds anything like a loud horrible screech, amost like a bearing siezing. I was planning to first check my diff oil level...Any ideas before I start pulling things out. Regards, Greg
Jack up the rear and the wheel to keep the half shaft near horizontal. Transmission in neutral; rotate the wheel and listen for a parking brake components binding or grinding inside the parking brake drum.
