First off, I wanted to say thanks to the forum for making my life easier. I was getting a GEN light and the amp needle was pegging out at 18 amps, a quick search in the C3 section and I had the answer. Basically, the generator puked.
Anyway, since I have got to replace it, I wanted to know how difficult it is and if anyone can point me in the right direction to go to a higher amperage system. I'm doing a restomod on my '79 and will be adding more electrics as I go along. Thanks.

You have an alternator not a generator and it sounds like the voltage regulator might be faulty. That can be replaced pretty easy if you want to keep the current system, NAPA sells a kit with a regulator, brushes and bearings for about $35.
You could do a search for alternator upgrade, there's several good posts about it. You can even convert yours; click on alternator parts, then the model # you have: (yours could be a 10SI)
Just converted mine from the 68 original at 45amp to 90 amp. Kept the original case and internals except for the new 90 amp stator. Take it to your local alt/ starter shop and they will convert it for you. From the out side you can't tell the change was made.
