Hi guys I'm fairly new into hotroddin but I gotta get for more proformance out of my 82 vette, its all original with the 200hp engine.
Any got any idea's on how I can get more HP w/o taking the engine out or if thats the only way to obtain around 400 hp, does anyone know where to get one say around the 3k range. Help me please I can't drive 55. Thanks John
400 HP with the TBI is going to be tough. The intake is very restrictive, but can be ported. A 383 kit, good heads, a cam, headers and dual exhaust would give you a real torquey engine. Still going to be hard to do for $3k. If you need to keep it smog legal it probably won't be possible.
Doesn't the computer in that thing kinda limit what you can do with it?
Well I guess I better just buy a crate engine and spend 6k on that
really thought I could do something with this thing. Trust me I think this body style and yours are the ones! So guess I'll start saving my pennies and go for it. Any speed shops that you would suggest that won't rip ya off?........
If you're willing to lower your HP standards, you can get a GM 350 HO Deluxe crate engine (330 hp, 380 tq) from your local GM dealer for about $4000 with everything except the accessories from the front of your engine and a new air cleaner. (The stock air ducts and cleaner don't fit a crate engine.) I have had one for 8 years and really like it.
A GM ZZ383 with a dual plane intake (the engine I would reeeeeally like to have) to fit under your hood would give you the 400 HP you want but would cost you about $6000 plus your '82 accessories and a few other parts.
Think about it for while. Do your homework and make sure you know all the costs before you make a move.
Yes Sir; Put the stock motor under the work bench, leave the computer hooked up on everything, but the injection system, it will all unplug at the firewall, bag the wires, under the bench also.. Buy the zz383 if you have the money, or the 330 HP Crate, less the trim. Put your own trim on, and have a ball. If I had it to do over I would buy the 502 HP. , nothing like the cubic inch. Your only living once, Leave the Mustangs out on the range, Your driving the only true American Sports Car, and the C3's are it brother. Have a ball Gene
Why is everyone so quick to play the crate motor card? This is how NOM cars are born.
I'm not a purist, but this is a bone stock original car he's talking about rippin' apart.
How about spending the six grand on a Fox Body Mustang and leave the Vette alone.
Get the Go Fast out of your system and save the Vette for a time when you can appreciate what it is.
Well.... I sure would not be able to live with 200hp eather!!!!
Heck, I am well over 500hp at the crank and I feel at times it is by no means enough... now I am thinking 700-800 may be just perfect!
But yes, California's smog laws suck
but you don't need to go buy a "crate" engine... build it yourself with the help of a good machine shop... save some money, build a stronger engine, and learn a ton as you go!
most of the power is in the heads and cam... I have done almost all the work myself, that and my 2 boys, ..... pull the engine, and as EASY MIKE said, go buy a "How to build small block chevys" book...
Yes Sir; The reason I picked the Crate motors, it has a warranty, it is Ready, one day to Remove & Replace, and I was on the road, Bad to the Bone. I didn't have to wait on any machine shop. Yes if I had a Son who was interested, it would of been great to be working & bonding with them. It just depends on the person who is doing it. Either way you are right on passing a Z06, makes it like telling a blind man how to see, and my blood run fast. Have a great one. Gene

it priceless when you pass a ZO6!!
Yo I agree 100% and let me ask you about your engine, HP, size etc.
Mine is a 82 and it looks like yours is too or an 80's something, love the body style! Would a 502 fit without major mods?
The 502 fits.
These cars had optional big blocks up until 74, so swapping one in is fairly easy.
Yup.
I have a 383, I have gone through 3 of them in 1 year... just a run of bad luck... just always go a roller cam
anyway, LOT of smart guys here, and a lot of good builds... heads and cams.. name of the game... one of my friends once told me, "it only takes money to go fast."
it has been a load of fun getting here... Just have fun, and ask lots of questions, someone will always chime in, good luck....
If you didn't like the power in the car, why did you buy it?
I didn't like the power of my '80 and I didn't like a few other components too, but there is a LOT more to a C3 than components. If I was buying an old car for power only, I certainly wouldn't have bought a Corvette. In that way, VetteBoy82 and I have something in common.
VetteBoy82, a lot of us here believe you should make your '82 the car you want it to be for your enjoyment. Go for it.
I have a bone stock 81 with 190 horses and it will go faster than my driving skills will allow me to drive it . I live in West Virginia and I doubt that 600 horsepower will get me around these curves any faster than 190 horses will do.
Maybe I need to go to Bob Bounduraunts driving school..
Just my Humble opinion

True, there is a limit to how fast you can get around curves for any driver in any car. Some of us enjoy getting to the speed limit quickly and generally enjoy the feeling both longitudinal and lateral g-forces we can't experience in our truck or daily commuter car. That's why I've dabbled a little at both the drag strip and autocross. It's a matter of personal preference and choice.
