terryrudy-Before I did the conversion to my shark L48, I installed a small grind dual patterned comp cam. (old cam w/ 98k mile had 6 flat lobs). I was running in the low 15 sec. 1/4 mile. Not bad for a stock '76 L48. You can alway build an engine or modify your vette to be a monster! It's a Chevy man!

PS When anyone wants to make a car faster regardless if it is a 32 Deuce coupe, Jaguar, AC, etc. by replacing the engine the #1 choice is a Chevy V8 (the 350 for a long time). #2 is another Chevy V8, #3 is another Chevy V8 !
Yes, Carroll Shelby wanted as first choice a Chevy V-8 for the Cobra !
I believe if you want a used vette, look for one with an unmodified L-48. It will usually be in better shape than an L-82 due to the fact that it couldn't have been driven too fast and hard. You end up with a better starting point that can lead you anywhere.
Interestingly, compare the low rpm torque and fuel requirements between an L-48 and an L-82.
Remember, you bought a classic American performance sports car designed to go around corners fast,
Enjoy your L-48 as you leave the stoplights and the gasoline pumps behind.
- Check your timing (read lars timing paper)
- Give you carb a tune up (read lars q-jet tuning guide) and make sure you're getting you secondaries all the way open at WOT.
- Install true duals and some good hi-flow mufflers.
- Add a cam (if you have the $$), or put some 1.6 rockers in there to give a bit of a boost on the cheap.
- Throw a clean set of plugs and plug wires on.
You'll be out less than $250 (minus cam installation) and I promise no one will be laughing. I haven't done a lot to my L48 performance wise except what's listed above and nobody thinks it's lacking in power.
:yesnod: And what people fail to realize, is that the L-48 has 20-30 more ft-lbs of torque than the L-82.
