HI,

74 corvette been running great for a year, drove it day before yesterday started is running strong starts better than most newer cars ive seen. went out today, starter doesn't even turn over... got nothing when i turn the key.

all fuses check out
car in park: doesnt turn over
car in neutral: still doesnt turn over

can it still be the neutral saftey switch??

thanks!

Check battery connections for corrosion and verify power at the starter. If you have power at the starter, then make sure the exciter wire has power to the solenoid when the key is in the crank position. Let us know what you find.

RE: the neutral safety - if it won't crank in either park or neutral, I doubt that's the problem. But you could hold the ign key in the crank position with left hand while moving the shifter up and down ... I guess it's possible that it could not be positioned right, to find either P or N. But that's a long shot.

Make sure the car is in neutral or park, double check that the car is in neutral or park, pull the parking brake, chock the wheels, then jump the big terminal to the solenoid with a screwdriver and see what happens. If it tries to start, it's a wiring issue. If it does nothing, it's a starter issue.

Turn on the headlights and watch them while someone tries to start it. If the lights dim then it's probably the starter sucking the juice but not turning. If the lights do not dim then usually the solenoid is not making contact to get the juice to the starter. In that case, it could be the solenoid, neutral safety switch, ignition switch, battery or wiring (which would include the battery cables).

Check fuses, and check fusible links. Those can go bad, and they are hard to spot right away. A voltage meter will tell you if you have power there or not. Then check the n/s switch with a test light. It should have the light on when in park and neutral, and go off when you go through the gears. If no power there, then that switch is bad. If you have power there, then most likely your starter or solenoid took a dumpsky on you. The solenoid may have shorted out, but it's just easier to change the whole she-bang, rather than just replacing the solenoid. Hope that helps!
