I need to pull the rear end on my '76 to replace the clutch packs.
I have a friend who can replace the clutches for me, but I need to remove it. Anyone have or know of some good instructions? My chilton's manual is no help at all.
hi if I remember correctly you have to remove the rear spring out of the car then take the drive shaft off, try to mark the shaft so you can put it back the way it came off. the next thing is to loosen the rear mounting to the front of the car and then put you r jack under the rear end so it will not fall. You may need help because you have to remove the rear crossmember and drop it as a unit. The rear end is bolted to it from the top. I may have missed a few things but this should get you preaty close.
hope this helps

Remove everything that's attached to the diff, driveshaft, halfshafts, spring, dogbones. The diff is bolted from the top to a long mount. There are 2 bolts on the ends of this mount. Remove them and usually you'll have to pry the mount down from the frame.

You will also want to unbolt your half shafts, center piece the tie rods connect to, remove spare tire carrier, and remove or lower your exhaust. Don't take the crossmember bolts all the way out, leave them in place to catch the crossmember. You will likely need a pry bar or 2-jaw puller to get it to release. Once it is free the bolts will prevent it from crashing to the floor.
That long mount may be frozen to the chasis and u may need a crowbar to get it down. its best to let the jack sit right below the differential so that when u pry it down it drops like a half inch. if u take the tires off the car this process is much easier
