On an '80 vette, are all 6 u-joints the same size? I need to replace one on the driver's half shaft. I'm going to replace both since I'll have the shaft out anyway. If you have an autozone part #, I'd be grateful.
I just went through this with my 81. The drive shaft were different size from the half-shaft. The best thing to do is take the old joint with you to compare the size to the new joint. Tim
I just did mine, and all 6 were the same size on my car. All 6 were the bigger 1330 HD ujoint. They were a Precision brand ujoint, part number 254. Here is the summit add for them. I know the drive shaft were supposed to be different, but i learned otherwise.
I have an '81 4spd and they are different joints for the driveshaft and halfshafts. I ordered genuine solid dana/spicer units.
I want to say they are 1310 for the driveshaft and 1350 for the halfshafts.
I'll be replacing all my u-joints this winter. My understanding is Spicer 1310 for the drive shaft and 1350 for the half shafts. But I'd also take the old one in just to be sure.
The original AC Delco U joints are still available. I think the part number is 89029305. The rear half shafts use the same U joint. Don't know about the driveshaft except on an auto tranny the ujoint to the tranny is often different.
Make sure you buy good quality U joints. Non greasible are stronger. Spicer seems to have a good reputation, but sometimes they sell the same part in two or more quality ratings so be careful.
The u-joints came in 3 sizes(most popular). You can measure the old one's and compare to this information....:
1310 series 3 -1/4" across the caps and a 1 -1/16" cup diameter. rated at 400ft/lbs continuous
1330 series... 3 -5/8" across the caps and a 1 -1/16" cup diameter. Rated at 550ft/lbs continuous.
1350 series .. 3 -5/8" across the caps and a 1 -3/16" cup diameter. rated at 680ft/lbs continuous.
Try and stick with the "solid type" joints and not the one's with a grease fitting. The grease-able joints were weaker as the body of the joint has been drilled out and made hollow for grease.
Yep, get the spicers. Well worth it. I got the 1310 and 1350's on mind. But I had a trans shop press them in for me. Got them at a big truck supply parts store.
