My front seal on tranny was leaking on my 79. So I decided to relace it. Upon removing the Torque converter I noticed it had a groove cut in it. So I repalced (chance to justify a new stall one). Anyway after about 4 months of so it starts leaking again. It's a daily driver. I checked the tranny bolts to engine, flex plate bolts and torque converter bolts all of which were tight.. Any ideas
Obviously, you did NOT replace the bushing in the charging pump 'snout'. The torque converter hub fits into the charging pump (those square slots in the hub drive the pump gear). Usually the front seal wears out because the pump bushing is shot. Since you just installed a new seal...but not a new bushing, it will just wear out in no time.
Now, you can do it all again and install just a new pump bushing. But with an 'old' automatic transmission, how long will it be until some other worn-out part shows up?
Bite the bullet and get it rebuilt when you pull it.
A worn front seal is just the 'tip of the iceburg'. That seal doesn't wear out unless there is damage on the TC journal or there is heavy wear in the pump bushing. It is merely a sign that the tranmission is overdue for a rebuild.
Changing the seal is pretty easy....once you get the tranny out of the car and remove the torque converter. But if you go that far, it would be foolish not to go all the way.
