Am looking at two vettes with sidepipes. Since I am new at this, I was wondering if there is anything I can do to reduce the sound level so that I can hear myself think. I love the look but I can't have a conversation when the car is on!!! Not sure about the technical side of them. One set were chrome hooker pipes, you know the kind that permanently burn your leg, and the other look like factory 69's.
I had 69 sidepipes on my SBC 68. They were too loud for my taste. I added a short glasspack between the manifold and sidepipe, that made it more tolerable.
When I did an engine swap, I went with these... I left out the glasspack and they were still much quieter. http://www.sweet-thunder.com/corvett...pes_68_74.html
You can also add baffles in the hooker style sidepipes.
You can get mufflers or glass packs for the Hooker Headers but there is a performance loss with the mufflers also you can buy shields for the muffler area that are chromed but I went with glass packs and no shields and the noise Heck that is part of the fun!
When I bought my car, it had a crossover tube between the exhaust pipes and glass-pack mufflers under the original factory covers. Fairly quiet, but it sounded like crap.
mine were straight thru chambered when I bought it.. way too loud, it was a major project converting to stock exhaust.. especially the back exhaust exit panel had to be setup, painted, buffed, glassed in, bezels purchased.. etc...

As for the Hookers, in addition to reverse flow and glass pack inserts, they also offer Max Flow inserts, which Hooker claim outflow open pipes. They supposedly have a nice deep sound, but bark quite a bit when you get on the loud pedal. I've asked a couple of times if someone would post a clip so I/we could hear them, but no luck.
I have heard a couple of different sized Sweet Thunders and some STS's, and of the two would opt for the former, as the STS's sound a too metalic for my ear.
As mentioned, the better they perform, the louder most any insert will be.
If joining the Hooker Tattoo Club is something you want to avoid altogether, look into Steel Shields from CF'er Bangkok Dean.
Another alternative is chambered exhaust that goes out the back which is like having side exhaust but a lot quieter inside. I've had the header side pipes but prefer the 2.5 chambered under the car pipes which still have a great sound and no leg burning. I got mine from Allen's Stainless Exhaust.
