Default Differential Cushion

I'm about to change my rear differential cushion mount and would like a few more pointers and maybe how to/pics. I searched some threads but they get confusing. Some say drop the driveshaft some dont. Whats the deal with this thing....someone...??? please...

I've never done this without removing the driveshaft, and I can't guarantee it can't be done that way, but I don't think you could get the mount bolt out with the driveshaft in. Its only four bolts to take the driveshaft out, anyway.

true but ive read in doing this they can't get the driveshaft to line up after because the differential moved.

Whoever told you that doesn't know anything about these cars. First, the differential is not going to move because you change the pinion cushion. Even if it did, it would have to move a LONG way before you wouldn't be able to connect the driveshaft. There are two universal joints and a slip yoke on that shaft.

Read it on here somewhere. I dont care if i take the driveshaft out, probably needs new joints anyway. Just dont want any " oh no " after.

Speaking of driveshaft u joints, does the sockets and vise method work? Im probably going to get to these in a little while.

He was likely referring to the phase angle and not the installation of the shaft per se. If the new cushion is a different height than the old, then the driveline angle can get messed up.

On some cars you don't need to remove the drive shaft ,I've done a few and on the 80 you can do it easily without the removal of the shaft , you will know when you pull the bolt out , sometime if you rotate the shaft you can replace it! Ron

I just finished doing this on my 81. I can not see anyway possible to do it without at least removing the drive shaft from the Diff and sliding it back out of the way. The hardest part for me was getting the new bushings lined up correctly before tightening the bolt. Not much room in there to see or use your hands. Good Luck

I think this was the first thing I had to do when I got my '76. I was able to replace the cushion without removing the drive shaft. Perhaps different years have different obstructions...??
