In another post...I posted the head numbers, and pat replied with 305 head info....but here is the number
1401441
I also posted intake numbers and found out its a 302/350 intake GM used everywhere apparently...basically what I think happened, was the guy that blew up my dads 400, just threw a motor together with left over parts(probably used)....which is a scary thought as it is.
The top one seems like a good deal. I think before it got droped in I would put in a better cam...but thats about it. Everything else could come with time...What do you think about that for a starting point?
Here is a link that will answer all your casting number related questions. And in the unlikely event that it doesn't, click on the e-mail link at the site and ask Ed your question. He helped my out with a few that I had. http://www.mortec.com/location.htm
If I were you, I would keep the short block you have and put some decent heads on it. You mentioned the intake is the generic one used on 350's and 302's... I do not think so, the stock '69 302 was aluminum and for a holley, not a Q-jet. If your Dad's friend put in a 302, I would thank him. The Chev 302 was a destroked 350 LT-1 pretty much. It was a killer engine that would be very happy with some 4.56's in the rear end.
Your big hold back are the heads. 305's were pretty much the worst engine Chev ever made. Replace the heads with some good aftermarket heads with 64cc cambers and you will more than make up for the lower compression with better flow. Get good heads and you can use them on any other engine you build.
