Default Locking gas cap.....stuck?

So i went to fill my 69 up for the first time and i can't get the gas cap off.

It has a key and i put the key in and tried to turn it. Seems like it turns a little better counter clockwise then it does clockwise. But i can't get it to make a complete unlock...

I just don't want to break the key off though. Is there a trick to these things? push down on it? turn the cap while turning the key?

Lube it. Holding the cap while turning the key may help.

I sprayed some PB down the key hole but there isn't much of a way to lube the underside mechanics without taking the cap off once first.

Worst case scenario i break the key....what would then have to happen to get the cap off?

Take the key out & see if it is straight. Don't break the key off- they are easy to pick.

May be a stupid question, but are you sure you are using the correct key. If it is an original cap from 1969 the car came with 3 keys. The gas key would be much shorter than the ignition key or the key for the storage compartments.

don't know what i did differently but i somehow got it.

I bet i was thinking the cap would need to turn to unlock but it looks like it just fits right on then when you turn the key the insides lock it somehow.

So without spinning the cap any the thing just lifted right up.

You were lucky. When I picked up my 71' for the first time (200 miles from home), I got half way and figured I should get gas since I didn't know how accurate the gauge was. Pull into a gas station popped the gas door lid and low and behold, a locking gas cap. There was NO key on the key ring for it! So.......the gas staion guy let me use his battery powered drill and I drilled out the lock. To bad too since it was an original 71' piece. I spent 3 hours going over this car from top to bottom before I bought it, but never thought to look at the gas cap.
