If your carpet is in otherwise good condition, why not just remove the pass side and THOROUGHLY flush it out with soap and water. See what you have then.
My 78SA apparently had a heater core leak sometime in its past. Was repaired but they never cleaned the carpet. It always felt sticky directly under the heater and it did smell a bit.
Figured I'd see what I could do and took it out and hung it over my fence and really hosed it off. Soaped it up and brushed and flushed it again. Years of anti freeze soaked into it stained it a bit so I experimented with interior spray dye. Turned out great. After dying it, I brushed it out with a stiff brush and it looks and feels like new.
And I had already purchased a front carpet set. Ended up sending the new carpet back.

Replace your heater core, then clean your carpets.
