Default Oil pump pickup

1975-350

Im going to change over the oil pan and pump soon and have a question on what pickup to use. Im going to get the stock replacement milodon pan (#30700) and probably a standard volume pump (#18755).

Question is , I've read about pickup tubes that " clamp " or " screw down " to the pump so they don't move. But I can't seem to figure out which one i can use. Anyone know? I checked through summit and they look quite different than the stock pickup (i know obviously ) and I don't want to find out i have depth or clearance issues with the pan when I get to that point.

Also do you need to have baffles in the pan? The replacement ones dont seem to come with them. Does the stock one have them?

If you're using a stock type pump, its best the spot weld the pickup to the pump so it doesn't come loose later.

There are some aftermarket ones with bolt on pickups. They're usually designed for racing type pans. If you get a stock type, just take it to a machine shop or welder, it won't cost much.

Melling "M Select" line of premium oil pumps have bolt-on pick-ups. Part number M10552 is 10% higher volume pump. Here is a link to parts: http://www.mellingselectperformance....nOilPumps.aspx

Default Check the oil pump gear housing cover clearance.

The flat housing cover clearance is crucial in the oil pump. U should check it before u weld or braze the the pu tube and check then set if nessesary after the weld/braze heating. It's just a few thou of inche but is critical so the gear don't grind the cover or oil doesn't flow around the top of the gears.

I check the pu tube to pan clearance also. This is done with clay and u need to do this by installing pan - with gasket - and checking the smashed clay height - playdough will do. Yes this is pain from the bottom of the car but it needs to be done and i got through it several times myself so it can be done.

U should always use a baffle in the oil pan as oil whipped up by the shaft not only costs HP but it airates the oil (air bubbles in the oil) and not good for lifters and bearings. Try a windage try? Some are a bit difficult as i couldn't get one in mine but they do help save a few HP. Yep baffles and windage trays are very cheap HP.

Hope this helps ya,

Yeah it does, little confused on what you mean by the first section of your reply however. ?? Whats that mean? Im using a new pump...if that helps any.

I order a milodon set, pan, pump, pickup etc.

I will check the pan fit to pickup with some clay.

What i'm trying to say is that the new pump u have has a flat cover plate over the pump gears inside. Just 2 or 3 screws hold the cover down. Once u heat the pump to weld or braze the PU tube to the pump the clearnce may change due to distortion. U could use clay to measure this clearance also. I recall i used feeler gauges somehow but can't seem to explain it now. Regardless, this clearance is very important for good operation of the oil pump and long pump life.

Hope this helps,
