I have a 1975 L82 4-speed. We are new vette owners and are concerned about a strange noise coming from the rear end of the car. I've recently had all the u-joints replaced but the noise persists. I'm thinking that it's a noise from the diferrential or bad bearings. I only notice the noise after the car is warm, after driving about 5-10 miles. I can best describe it as a slipping or grinding noise. Any ideas?
This is a common problem and is usually fixed by adding a bottle of posi additive to the diff. Get the original GM fluid. After you add it to the diff take the car to a parking lot and drive around in circles a few times in both directions.
Guy is right. I had the same problem, also had the left rear wheel jump like it was out of round when I started off. Replaced the u-joints did not help. Thought it was rear wheel bearings but someone on the forum suggested changing the rear end grease and posi fluid. Did that and after a few day of driving around town it went away. Make sure you replace the posi fluid with two bottles of additive. Suggestion: Take your wifes turkey baster and attach a flexible plastic hose to it for draining old grease. THe hose can be pushed down into the case to siphon most of the old sh$t out. It is messy and takes a while to get it all out. This may or may not be your problem but it is still good to change the rear fluid anyway. If it does the trick, Chevy told me to replace the fluid one more time to totally flush out the old. Good luck!
Dittos of above comments. I have found using Amsoil (gear oil) with two bottles of GM additives works the best for the posi. I usually drive my shark in circles in the begining of the year and it seem to take care of the clutch packs grind.
