Default control arm bushings

Im replacing top and bottem, 78 corvette. When I take the old bushings out the control bar is tight in the bushing, when I put the bar end back in the new bushing, it is loose. I heard they should turn freely but when I tighten the caps will they be a little more snug on the rod? Seems like they would just turn on the end of the shaft and ware.

With the caps tight the cross shaft will be locked to the bushing. Any movement at the arm will deflect the bushing. Be sure the bolts for the caps do not bottom out in the cross shaft.

Also, don't tighten the caps until the car is on the ground and at the right ride height. If you tighten them while it's on jacks you can tear the bushing.
