Default Help on headlights please

Just wanted to pick some brains out there to save myself some time and possibly money

Nearly through my resto, i have the monza style headlight units (rectangular) installed and wired up, all earths are clean and well grounded, when i pull the light switch the first click sees the side lights come on ... all good.

The second click sees the outer units on each side come on (two pin connections on the unit) and... the inner units (three pin connections) come on but very dim, when the high beam is switched on (from the column stalk) the high beam lights fine on the inner units.

The problem seems to lie with the headlights on the inner pair only lighting dim, i disconnected the high beam switch (i think you guys call it the dimmer switch http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...8&dept_id=1171) and checked the connections, there is a thick blue, tan and light green, i see from the wiring diagram that the green is headlight and tan is the high beam, the thicker blue is the feed from the side light/headlight switch, if i bridge the blue and tan on the switch connector (switch taken out) the whole lot lights up nice and bright, if i bridge blue and Lt green the smae problem with outer lighting OK with the inners lighting very dim, so the problem doesnt seem to be the dimmer switch, i have already fitted a new side light/headlight switch so now i stumped ???

Any help appreciated

TIA

Wev are the inners dual lamp and the outers single? What are the wattage ratings?

I thought the outer were supposed to be the dual filament and the inners just used for the high beam.
I know on my old 75, with the headlights on low...I could probably have got more light using candles!!!!!

Lo Jotto, the lamps are Wagner 1A1 & 2A1, not sure on the wattage, i'll have to look it up, they are sealed beams, they do light up very bright over a 12v direct connection to a battery, just not when installed

The inner lights should not come on at all on low beam. They are for high beam only. There is a short in the wiring or something connected wrong if the inner lights are coming on. That will also siphon some of the current away from the low beam bulbs, probably making the outer lights dimmer than they should be. With the original wiring harness it's not possible to mix up the single and dual filament bulbs. The single filament has a 2-prong connector and the dual filament has a 3-prong conector.

OK, i think i see the error now, the wiring diagram PDF i was sent shows the dual beam on the inside, in fact this should be on the outside, thats one problem solved, i now need to check the three prongs to see if the correct wire is going to the correct filament, i.e. tan low beam, Lt green high beam (to all four lamps).

I'll make some checks and adjust the wiring to suit later, i'll post up results.

Thanks for the heads up and taking the time to post

I am having a simmilar problem but all the wires are in order.. My lowbeams are very dim and when the car is in low beam mode the bright filiments are slightly glowing.. I have run all the wires backj and checked all grounds no problems.. What else could it be??? (Dimmer switch?) (headlight switch?) Im baffled. OH ya if I put it in high mode then the brights are bright and the dims are still low .

Install relays and you will have full voltage from the battery. As your light switch contacts wear there is higher resistance causing a decrease in volatge to the lights.
