Default Ready for brakes need advice

Alright, restoration is moving forward and now that motor is running again its time for next phase...stopping!

My project had no calipers and the rotors are trashed. I have found 2 caliper cores from my dads 68 but I am in need of 2 more. Any ideas where to find these? I hate to have to pay the 60 bucks + for each core I am missing.

Next, I am interested in buying one of the "everything you need to stop" packages so i can ensure everything is new and should ease the install. Are there any recommended vendors for this package that people have had good luck with? As always price is important...any better value than others? I am not interested in auto crossing or any racing so just a decent weekend driving set up will do.

Thoughts,

Thanks!

The problem with Vette brakes is that the piston seals are so thin that they collapse and leak when sitting for a while, plus they allow air to enter the system if the rotors are just a few thousands of an inch out of round.

The Vette Brakes & Products O-ring seals are supposed to cure these problems. You can either buy stainless-sleeved calipers from someplace like AutoZone and rebuild them with the VB&P O-ring kit or buy the calipers from VB&P. If yout 2 cores aren't sleeved you couldn't rebuild those with the O-ring kit. I think that virtually all rebuilt calipers these days have SS sleeves.

The calipers on my car were SS-sleeved and I rebuilt them once using standard seals. The calipers sat for 3 years while I rebuilt the chassis, and leaked again when re-installed. I rebuilt the calipers again with the VB&P O-ring kit and so far I haven't seen any leaks.

I don't know that anyone is going to sell you bare calipers, and about the cheapest you'll find remans without a core is ~$100 per corner. You can however just purchase the front or rear half of the VB&P kit if it comes to that. (and you do want the VB&P kit btw, it's good stuff)

Maybe give the guys over at Duntov a call. www.duntovmotors.com I know they buy cores outright, so they may have a few on hand that they'll sell you.

I went with VB&P SS sleeved O-Ring calipers and rotors and am very happy with them, no issues at all with the installation... other than me ruining one of the brake hoses... which lead to me getting the SS Braided hose kit which I should have done at the beginning anyways, so much easier installing than the rubber lines.

Give your hardlines a glance as well, I found a nice little ding on my rear cross over that almost completely cut off flow to one of the calipers. Fairly cheap to replace as well.

Good Luck!!

I have been in the same boat that you are in, no cores. The problem is all used calipers that I have found sell for at least the same amount ($50-$60) that the core exchange is.
Good luck

Well it sounds as if Vb&p is the way to go for the package. And I appreciate the info on the lined calipers vs not.
The core problem is one I suppose I'll just have to deal with and fork over the money.
Thanks for the replies and I'll get started on my research.
