I am getting ready to pull the engine out of my 73 for a rebuild. Would I be better off leaving the 4 speed in the car or pulling it out with the motor. Also I need a new timing cover since I threw the original one away 30 years ago when I installed a new timing chain and a chrome cover. Are all the timing covers from the mid 70's the same? The shop that is going to rebuild my motor says he has plenty of timing covers but there are two different styles and I would like the orignial style but not sure what it looks like. Thanks for your help. I am sure I will have plenty more questions.
DON'T HAVE THEM "DECK" THE BLOCK - it will remove important numbers.
Ok, now then, I would pull both at the same time, you can clean up the trans, check the bushings etc. I believe the covers are all the same don't know what they mean by 2 styles, maybe some one else can chime in..
Good Luck,
Frank

Reason: typo
Pull the tranny, too. You will want to check out the linkage and bushings [probably well-used and worn], the condition of the tranny mount and will likely clean it up while it is out. You could also check the input & output seals for leakage/wear and even remove the side cover to inspect the gears & syncros if you feel the need.
The GM overhaul manual says to pull engine and tranny as a unit. That's what I did with my '70 way back in the 70's. Get the car elevated off the ground a bit so you can get the angle you need to get them both out.
