The other day I hear a good bit of noise especially when i turn the wheel and believe it is the power steering pump. I looked where it is located on the engine and it is directly beneath my alternator with very little room between each. How in the world do you check the fluid? I assume if I turn the cap there will be enough room for it to come off? Looks like fun trying to add fluid this way!
Yes. You just want to check oil level when the engine is "cold". Otherwise, you will likely burn yourself on 'hot' stuff. The cap is a 1/2 twist (CCW) type, so it is easy to come off. There are 'cold' and 'hot' fill lines on the little plastic dipstick on the underside of the cap. It is highly probable that you are just low on fluid. Get a long-neck funnel at the auto parts store for about $3 and a small bottle of P/S fluid. The funnel makes adding fluid much easier. Add fluid slowly, as it fills quickly near the top. Once filled, start the car and exercise the steering a couple of times (to rid the lines of any trapped air); then check fluid level again. Add if necessary. If you have correct fluid level and the P/S pump still makes noise when making a 'full' steer, the pump is starting to wear out and you should consider rebuilding it or replacing it when you can.
If it were me, I would get a bottle of the GM fluid and a turkey baster or vacuum pump and simply suck all the old stuff out and replace it with new fluid. I did that to mine and any hint of noise disappeared.
