Got a question. I bought a used M-20 Muncie and when setting up the Hurst shifter on the bench, I noticed the main shaft for the cluster gear sticks about 1/64th in. out of the case. This means the front of the transmission will not fit flush to the bell housing when bolted in. Can this shaft just be driven on into the transmission with a hammer or do I have a problem ?
It may not be clocked correctly to match the mid-plate. gently try to tap it back. If it doesn't go then you will have to pull back the tailshaft housing from the main case and then work the mid plate back so you can get it properly aligned.
More than likely you'll have a leak at that shaft from the front of case
Howdy Phil. I just rebuilt a M21 and they are not that difficult to mess with. I bet you could get it done by yourself. I can most likely provide you some schematics to looks at. Give me a buzz.
4-speeds dont cost alot to get worked on in most cases. Find a good shop in your area and have them check the trans out for you. They can correct the issue you have and check for any others and you wont have to worry about it or have to pull it back out of the car. A couple hours of labor can go a long way on a 4-speed on a bench.
Found out the problem today, The transmission that was to only have 500 miles on it since a rebuild, was a mess. Whoever rebuilt it didn't know a lot. shaft for cluster gear had been pushed into the main case too far and cracked the case. The synchronizer brass rings and sliders have to be replaced, bottom line is I am going to have an additional $500.00 in the trans to get it right. New case, new synchros.
